Civitavecchia is a town located in the province of Rome and is next to Tuscany. It is the closest sea connection to the capital, which is why it is very popular and used for various trips.

But Civitavecchia is also perfect for a weekend escape from the city, as it is steeped in history and has a wonderful waterfront. So let's find out what's interesting to see in this magical place.

The history of Civitavecchia

Civitavecchia long ago was called "Centumcellae", which means "one hundred rooms", probably due to the number of rooms in Trajan's villa. Thanks to its strategic position near the sea and the capital, Civitavecchia soon began to develop economically.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Saracen pirates. The locals fled into the hills giving birth to a new city where they lived for a hundred years, calling it Cencelle. When the Saracens left, the inhabitants decided to return by creating a new location, built on the ruins of the old city which took the name of "Civita Vetula", which means Old City, and then became Civitavecchia.

What to see in Civitavecchia

Civitavecchia can be discovered all in one day by walking and getting lost in the streets of the city. The first thing to see is certainly the medieval old town that starts from Piazza Leandra, where we can admire the fountain and the Church of the Star. You then pass through the Porta dell'Archetto in order to arrive in Piazza Saffi, where you can see the ancient city walls.

In Piazza Regina Margherita, on the other hand, we can stroll among the fruit and vegetable stalls of the San Lorenzo market. We also find clothing and footwear stalls, as well as food and much more. This market is symbolic for the city, especially for the sale of fish.

Another thing that cannot be missed if you go to Civitavecchia is the seafront. You have to reach Piazza degli Eventi, where great concerts and shows are organized and there is a beautiful view of the sea. From here you can start walking along the promenade that arrives at Pirgo, an area frequented by young people, full of bars and restaurants active especially in summer until late.
